about

By Miles Maxwell Third coast press 2003 music review

I went digging for an undiscovered jewel of the Chicago
music scene. I unearthed a raw precious stone that
illustrates the best of this city’s musical underbelly, yet lies
undisturbed by the national media. Of all the bands I
heard, most arresting was hard rock trio Barajas from
Chicago’s north-side Albany Park neighborhood.
Originally founded in 2001, Barajas is made up of guitarist,
lead singer and primary songwriter known only as Pablo,
bassist, founder and occasional vocalist Steve Joseph, and
drummer Herman Winkler, a scene veteran. The band’s
debut effort, an EP called Eternal, was recorded on a brief
sojourn to Minneapolis and produced by one of their idols,
Ev Olcott of the alterna/punk band 12 Rods.
In this time of retro-mod garage bands, Barajas borrows
their vintage vibe from Rush and Metallica. Indeed, the first
thing to jump out at the listener on Eternal is the virtuosic
drumming of Winkler, whose precision and power evoke
comparisons to both Neil Peart and Lars Ulrich. The fitting
complement to his double bass drumming is Pablo’s guitar,
which hints at the seamless and seemingly neverending
sustain of their early eighties rock idols.
I spoke with the band about their unique style, how it fits
with Chicago’s overall music climate and how they’re
winning fans the old-fashioned way. Pablo said this: “We’re
a hardworking family-style band, and we’re doing things
other bands aren’t doing or can’t do. That’s not to say we
don’t love what others here are doing. We’re starting to see
several bands coming up, playing the same venues, playing
to some of the same fans, and that’s exciting…once you’ve
got a community of bands, then you’ve got a scene and
then you’ve got a movement, then you and your friends are
representing Chicago’s music to the country.”
“A hardworking family” is certainly an appropriate
description for a band which outfitted their station wagon
roof with a 4' x 6' billboard displaying the band’s logo and
outlined it with theater aisle strip lighting. They have also
been known to staple flyers under the El tracks.
As far as swaying people against the current popular
trends, Joseph asked, “Isn’t it true that trends always
change into the things you’d least expect?”
